Obituary for Alberta Alice Haines

Baileyville – Alberta Alice “Tunny” Haines, 91, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Atlantic Rehab & Nursing Center in Calais. Alberta was born in Baileyville on March 13, 1920, daughter of that late Murry and Alice (Lakin) Haynes. After graduating from Woodland High School, she furthered her education at Farmington Normal School, and also received her Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Maine in Orono. She served in the United States Army during WWII and then Tunny taught school in Venezuela for three years until relocating to Connecticut, from where she retired. After retiring, she moved back to Woodland to take care of her mother and taught school in Calais. Tunny was an avid traveler, visiting 52 countries as well as traveling throughout the United States. She was a member of People’s United Methodist Church in Baileyville. In addition to her parents, Alberta was predeceased by two sisters, Annie and Gertrude; two brothers Edwin and Irvin; and a nephew Forest Woodruff Sr. Surviving are her nephew Dennis Woodruff of Baileyville; great nephews Forest Woodruff Jr. and his partner Dave Higgins of Grand Lake Stream, Craig Woodruff of Princeton, Dennis Woodruff II and his wife Char of Big Lake Township; great nieces Dorie Dunton and her husband Smokey of Newburgh, and Crystal Monk and her husband Troy of Baileyville; special friend and caregiver Lynn Armstrong and friend Richard Howe. Visiting hours will be held 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 21st at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St. Calais. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 on Monday following visitation at the funeral home.
