Obituary for Alice Madeline White

Baileyville – Alice Madeline White, 92, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Calais Regional Hospital. Alice was born in St. Anne, New Brunswick, on May 13, 1921, daughter of the late Benjamin and Helen (Allen) White. As a young child, the family moved to Baileyville where she graduated from St. Croix High School, Class of 1942. Alice worked at the Shank Mill in Princeton until beginning her career at Ware Knitters where she worked as a stitcher for 21 years, retiring in 1985. She was a Communicant of St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Baileyville where she was a member of St. James Sodality, and enjoyed crafts, reading, and traveling. Alice was an active member with Senior Companion Program, visiting the elderly for over 32 years. She was the longest serving companion in the state of Maine, clocking in 10,036 hours, and never divulged her client’s names. Alice was proud to have been invited to Augusta by Governor Baldacci where she received an award for her devotion to volunteer work. She had a smile for everyone and never spoke negatively of anyone.

Alice is survived by a special cousin who was like her sister, Rita McLaughlin of Calais; cousins Norman Richard of Baileyville, Gloria Lanigan of Baileyville, Marion Wyss and husband John of Lopez Island, WA, Pamela Richard of Baileyville, Edward Richard and wife Susie of Alexander, Marty Richard and wife Julie of Alexander, Brad Richard and wife Kristina of Princeton, Sandra Litcher and husband Andrew of Portland; numerous other cousins and close family throughout Maine, New Brunswick, Florida, and Massachusetts; her friends at Woodland Manor, Darleen, Donna, Kaye, and Vina; dear friends Barbara McArthur, Mike Boies and his family, Deb Eckart, and Deb Gardner; as well as numerous other friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Rob Lupo 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Baileyville. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Donations in Alice’s memory may be made to Senior Companions, 28 Center St., Machias, ME 04654. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
