Alma Jean Bailey, a woman of tenacity and grace, left us on November 7, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on May 19, 1933, in Brockway, New Brunswick, Canada, to Walter and Helena (Libby) O'Mar, Alma's journey was equal parts hardship and triumph. Despite having to leave school early to care for her family, she always carried with her a love for learning and an indomitable spirit that she passed onto her children. Her warm and welcoming nature was apparent to everyone she met, and her ability to create beauty from fabric as a seamstress brought joy to many.
Alma's life was marked by resilience and dedication. After marrying the love of her life, Henry Bailey, on June 28, 1952, she transitioned from working at Chipman Hospital and Ganong's Chocolate Factory in St. Stephen to the bustling world of clothing manufacturing. Alma's talent as a seamstress was not just a livelihood, but a passion that she pursued until her retirement. Following the loss of Henry, Alma moved to Arizona to live with her daughter Donna. With the untimely passing of Donna at the age of 30, she then moved to St. Augustine, Florida until finally returning home to Calais. Her strength and courage during these challenging times were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Alma is survived by her children, Joseph Bailey and wife Tammy of New Hampshire, and James Bailey and wife Heidi of Oklahoma; a son-in-law James Cleary of Florida; and several grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Helena O'Mar, her beloved husband, Henry Bailey, and her two daughters, Donna Hoover and Joan Cleary.
A graveside service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
