Obituary for Alvin Matthew Kinney Jr.

Eastport – Alvin Matthew “Dimpie” Kinney Jr., 58, passed away unexpectedly on January 7, 2009 in Las Vegas, NV while visiting friends. Dimpie was born in Eastport on June 7, 1950, son of the late Alvin “Dimp” Kinney Sr. and Clara (Robinson) Kinney. He graduated from Shead Memorial High School, Class of 1968, and from the University of Maine at Machias with a degree in Business Education in 1972. Dimpie taught business education at Shead High School for many years and was an Administrator for the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home. Dimpie had a strong entrepreneurial spirit that he followed throughout his life. He owned and operated Kinney’s Flower and Gift Shop in Eastport, the Berman mall where he owned various businesses, Uniquely Yours in Thomaston, and the Last Chance Saloon in Eastport. Dimpie loved the City of Eastport and was very active in the community. He was a member of the Shead High School Boosters Club, Eastern Buccaneers Color Guard, and was Co-Chairman for the Eastport Fourth of July Committee. Dimpie received the Harry Mattin Business Award, the Shead High School Athletic Boosters Award, and the Outstanding Shead Alumni Award. He enjoyed traveling, going to places like Hawaii, Florida, the Bahamas, New York City, and especially to Las Vegas. Dimpie was a big supporter of the July 4th activities in Eastport, where he won many prizes for his floats. Dimpie’s most enjoyable moments were those spent with his family and friends. He will truly be remembered for his generosity, being the “big guy with the big heart.” Surviving are his loving sister, Sally Brown and her husband Bud of Georgetown; a special niece, Clara Elizabeth Brown of Greenville, NC; an uncle, Bill Robinson and wife Gretchen of Roanoke, VA; his aunt Geraldine Kinney of Eastport; several cousins; the “Q-Tips”; and many, many other friends. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
