Eastport, Perry and Calais - Amelia Wentworth Frankland, 96, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2022 at Calais Hospital with her family by her side. Amelia was born in Eastport on December 28, 1925, the daughter of George C Matthews and Mattie E (McPhail) Matthews.
She was the 3rd child of 7. Amelia graduated from Shead High School in June of 1944 where she was a member of the State Girls Basketball Championship Team in 1944. She had worked in the Eastport Hospital as a nurse’s aide during high school. She enjoyed working in the Nursery with the new babies and their mothers most of all. Then she and her best friend, Marion Colwell, went to Stratford Connecticut and worked in a defense plant as an aircraft assembler during World War II.
Amelia came back to Eastport after the war and in 1948, she married Harold Frankland. She was able to be a ‘Stay at Home’ Mom and she loved to cook! She made the best bread, fried dough with molasses, baked beans and preserves. She was a member of the North Street Baptist Church and after they moved to Perry, she went to Perry Bible Baptist Church, which is now Calvary Chapel Coastline. Amelia loved to go to all the Basketball Games she could. When she couldn’t drive anymore, people would pick her up and take her. That and Bingo were her favorite pastimes along with stopping to eat at The New Friendly Restaurant in Perry!
In addition to her parents, Amelia was predeceased by her son Jeffrey, her husband Harold and her great granddaughter Ava. Surviving are her son Gary, his sons, Jeffrey, Brent and Colby and three Stepdaughters, Tammy, Pamela and Shelly; and several great grandchildren; brother-in-law Herman ‘Buddy’ Frankland; and many nieces and nephews.
