Obituary for Arlene Ruth Barnard

Calais – Arlene Ruth Barnard, 90, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the Atlantic Rehab & Nursing Center in Calais. Arlene was born in Baring on July 13, 1919, daughter of the late Leonard and Mary “Mae” (Dowling) Wright. She graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1936, and went to work in the local shoe factory and with the American Red Cross during the World War Years. She returned home and married Arthur Charles Barnard on June 9, 1942 at the St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Baileyville. Arlene began her banking career with the Calais Federal Savings & Loan, National Bank and finally retiring after 30 years from the Merrill Bank on July 13, 1985. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church where she was a minister of the Eucharist and a member of the Ladies Sodality. She also was a very active member of the St. Croix No. 1 Fire House Assoc. Arlene enjoyed watching television, shopping, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Foremost in her life were her beloved family and church. In addition to her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her husband Arthur; and two brothers, Harold “Haddie” Wright and James “Ben” Wright. Surviving are her son Richard “Dick” Barnard and his wife Mary of Calais; two beloved grandchildren, Christopher Barnard and his wife Susan of Columbia, SC, and Marc Barnard and his wife Betsy of Calais; two great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly Adam and Andrew Barnard; her sister-in-law Marion Wright of Bangor; many nieces and nephews; numerous family members on her husband’s side; and the many dear friends she had accumulated over the years.
