Milltown — Arnold Alfred Clark, 73, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, with his family by his side. Arnold was born in Calais on June 24, 1945, son of the late Lloyd Howard and Sara Jean (Moffitt) Clark.
Arnold grew up in Milltown and was very proud of his Milltown roots. He enjoyed hearing & telling stories about its history, and had many special, lifelong friends from his years growing up there. After attending the Milltown Grammar School, Arnold went on to the Calais Memorial High School where he was a standout athlete on the baseball diamond and on the basketball court—and where he met the love of his life, Sue Ellen McNamara. After graduation, Class of 1964, he worked for a while at Georgia Pacific before attending the University of Maine at Machias. At Machias, the six-foot-three-inch center was a four-year starter. His sophomore year, he averaged 30 points and 18 rebounds a game. In 2017, UMM inducted Arnold into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Arnold and Sue married on June 29, 1968, settled in Milltown, and had two sons. After college, Arnold began his career as an elementary school teacher in Calais, where he taught until his retirement in July 2018. Arnold loved the outdoors, being at Howard Lake and Meddybemps Lake, and spending countless hours snowmobiling, trapping, hunting and fishing with family and friends. Arnold was a Registered Maine Master Guide and some of his most treasured memories were from the sixty-three hunting seasons he spent at the hunting camp at the Howard Mill Pond.
In 1974, Arnold began his coaching career, coaching the Calais Little League Senators until 1984, when he became the varsity basketball coach for the Calais Blue Devils until 1997. He then coached the Lady Dragons of Woodland High School for fifteen years, and then returned to Calais to coach the Lady Blue Devils before ending his coaching career in 2018. Over the years, he accrued over 400 career wins, 8 Eastern Maine titles, and 6 state championships.
Arnold was an active, hard-working man, raking blueberries, working the hayfields, cutting wood, hauling gravel, and working on camp projects throughout his life. Through it all, he always made time for family and in his later years he particularly enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Arnold was predeceased by two brothers, Darrell Howard Clark and Phillip Leroy Clark; a sister, Karen Sue (Clark) Howland; and nieces Paula Jean, Tammy Lynn and Sonja Jean. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years; son Arnie and daughter-in-law Tamara; son Derek and daughter-in-law Jaime; grandchildren Sofia, Oliver, Liam, and Nash; brother Stanley E.
