Arnold Lloyd McLaughlin, 76, passed away on October 3, 2024, at the age of 76, surrounded by the love of his four children and sister Ruth at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Arnold was born in Calais on October 2, 1948.
Arnold’s journey began in the small town of Princeton, where he graduated from Princeton High School in 1966. With a spirit of determination, he took his first steps into the working world at a local lumber mill. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to partner with a classmate, Ken Wheaton, to open a grocery store in 1975. This small venture blossomed into a successful chain throughout Maine, thanks to the collaborative efforts of another dear friend Rick Crowe.
Life for Arnold was filled with simple joys—boating on Big Lake, enjoying family road trips, listening to the music he loved, and spending time at the Narrows. In later years, he particularly cherished the moments he spent gathering his family for the annual McLaughlin reunions, which became a beloved tradition.
A man of principle, Arnold instilled in his children the value of integrity. He often reminded Caleb, “Always be a man of your word.” His dedication to his family was profound; he was an immensely proud father and grandfather, always offering support and encouragement. His generous heart touched many lives, as he extended kindness, understanding, and generosity within his community.
Arnold is reunited in spirit with his beloved mother, Thelma (McLaughlin) Bradstreet; stepfather Phillip Bradstreet; brother James McLaughlin; and sisters Penney Bradstreet and Dorothy Brown. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his four children: Monica Banks and husband Christopher of South Portland, Michael McLaughlin and wife Danielle Poulin of Raleigh, NC, Amanda Cormier and husband Joshua of Southern Maine, and James McLaughlin and wife Megan of South Dennis, MA. His memory will be cherished by his four grandchildren: Julia Banks, Colin Banks, Drew Cormier Debenham and her husband Will, and Caleb Cormier; his dear sister Ruth Curtis of Princeton; along with many nieces, nephews, good friends, and business partners who were inspired by his kindness. He will also be missed by his beloved feline companion, Miss Kitty.
In honoring Arnold’s wishes, there will be no formal services. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
