Calais – Austin Clifford Baker, 91, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015 at Calais Regional Hospital with his family by his side. Austin was born in Calais on July 25, 1924, son of the late Harley Baker Sr. and Lucy (McKnight) Baker. He graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1942, and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Army. After his service, Austin returned to Calais and worked for the City of Calais Highway Dept. until starting his career with St. Croix Paper Company. On September 8, 1952, he married his love, Anne Barnard. Austin retired from Georgia Pacific at the age of 62 with 35 years of service. He was a member of Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion in Calais, and the Quarter Century Club with GP. Austin was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and spending time at his camp on Meddybemps Lake.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Edna Baker; and his five brothers, Seth, Freeman, Harley, John and Bill. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Anne Baker; four daughters, Paula Stover and husband Kent of Township 26, Lucy Baker of Perry, Tina McGregor and husband Garnet of Little Ridge, NB, and Marcia Doyle and husband Charlie of Calais; four grandchildren, Shane McGregor and wife Chrissy of Little Ridge, NB, Stacy Whittier of Little Ridge, NB, Erik Clark and wife Danielle of Huntersville, NC, and Julie Allen and husband Nathan of Holden; 11 great-grandchildren, Haili, Jayden, Austin, Cassidy, Aniston, Adrial, Donnie, Brett, Ava, Izzy, and Scarlet; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais.
