Obituary for Bernard Roger Veader

Charlotte – Bernard “Bernie” R. Veader, 87, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2008 at the Calais Regional Hospital. Bernie was born in Boston, Mass. on August 16, 1921, son of the late John and Mary (Cregg) Veader. He was a WWII veteran of the Army Air Corps and a graduate of Northeastern University Law School and a retiree of the Boston Naval Shipyard. Bernie was a product of his generation where family and community were of the utmost importance. While a resident of Marshfield, Mass., he served as president of the Marshfield Rod & Gun Club and was an active conservationist. True to form, he donated the John F. Veader Conservation Area to the Marshfield Conservation Society. Bernie retired from Government Service and moved to Charlotte, and continued his commitment to the community. He donated a tract of land to be used as conservation land as well as the location of the Charlotte Fire Station. Upon his death, his house is donated to the Charlotte Historical Society for public use. Bernie was the focal point of his family and his birthday’s served as a coming home event for much of the family. Some families may have had a wealth of material things, but his family had a treasure in him. Bernie touched many people’s lives and one of his camp mottos encompasses his life, “always leave things a little better than you found them.” He did that and more. His children are quoted as saying “Life was great with you and the future will be better because of you. Thanks for being our dad.” Bernie was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Cyrena; and his brothers and sisters. Surviving are his 9 children, Cyrena V. Movitz, Harriet Albert-Smith and husband Michael, John W. Veader and wife Carol, Stephen R. Veader and wife Insun, Peter Cregg Veader and wife Tammy, Donald A. Veader and wife Nancy, Victoria A. Lincoln and husband Dennis, Cynthia M. Veader, and Robert T. Veader; 22 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
