Whiting - Beryl Ida (Green) Gardner passed away peacefully of old age on October 27, 2013. She was born September 11, 1921 in Whiting ME to Arthur Green and Mary Edna (Moores) Green. She was the sixth of nine children. She attended Whiting Village School and was a Washington Academy graduate in 1940. It was there she met her future husband Martin Gardner and on February 16, 1942 they were married in Portland ME. Together they did some traveling in the US during WWII. They settled in Halls Mills to raise their family of eight children. She was preceded by her parents, her brothers, Francis, Ray, Allan and Bobby and her sisters Julia Wheeler, Mary Knight and Barbara Clark, her son Frank in 1975, her husband in 1997 and her grandson Robbie in 1998.
She is survived by her sons John Gardner of Saco, Philip and Marjorie (Wood) Gardner of Machiasport, Kenneth and Linda (Whitney) Gardner of Limington and Ronald Gardner of Whiting. Her Daughters Carol Armstrong of Machias, Ruth Saumur and Richard of Cathance Township with whom she resided for the past two and a half years, and Deborah Gardner and George Molinski Jr. of Whiting. Her daughter-in-law Helen (Seeley) Mitchell of Eastport. Beryl leaves behind 13 Grandchildren, 5 Step Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren and two Great great Grandchildren. Beryl also is survived by her sister Ruth Shaw of New York, her sisters-in-law Margaret Gardner of Baltimore MD, Frances and Gene Wyles of Nova Scotia and Dorothy Sweeney of Bangor and a special cousin Lucy Augenstine of Lubec. She leaves many nieces and nephews and many friends that have been so kind to her through the years.
Beryl loved her “cats and dogs and little kids.” She liked a good picnic at the park, a warm summer afternoon of picking berries or many a winter night marveling at the full moon sparkling on the new snow. She was a lover of nature and all its greatness. She loved to read and spent many hours reading aloud to her children. In her working years she worked cleaning houses and as a nanny for several families in Dover-Foxcroft.
A graveside service will be held at the Whiting Village Cemetery on Saturday November 2nd at 11:00 with Pastor Betty Duzen. There will be a time of celebration immediately following the service at the Whiting Community Building.
