Obituary for Carleton Samuel Cooper

Cooper – Carleton Samuel Cooper, 81, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2008 after a long illness. He was born May 19, 1926 in Cooper to the late Samuel Drake and Corice Ella (Creamer) Cooper. Carleton was a life long resident of Cooper, Maine. He attended Cooper Schools and worked in the family blueberry fields until the last few years of his life. Carleton married Lida M. Southard on September 22, 1947. He loved to plow snow, hunt, fish and spend time telling stories with family and friends. Carleton enjoyed attending as many fairs as he could get to and could always be found at his favorite event, The Horse Pulls. He especially enjoyed the Blue Hill Fair and attended the Fryeburg Fair faithfully for twenty-nine years. Carleton worked at St. Croix Paper and then Georgia Pacific for a total of forty-one years. He was a lifetime member of the Pulp and Paper Makers Union, Local 27, and the Down East Blueberry Co-Operative. Carleton belonged to the Breakneck Mountain ATV Riders and was a member of the Draft Horse and Ox Association. Carleton was predeceased by his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Lida; four sisters, Eva Perkins, Effie Scott, Mildred Higgins, and Leota Aubrey. Surviving are his son, Gerald C. Cooper and his wife Sharon of Alexander; and one grandson, Carleton J. Cooper and friend Crystal Rousell of Alexander. Carleton was known to many as the Greatest Uncle and was extremely proud to be a Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Uncle, and leaves behind many special nieces, nephews and friends. Friends may call 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday, January 13 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with Pastor Chip Howell officiating. Burial will follow in the Alexander Cemetery.
