Carol E. McElarney

March 31, 1948 — December 31, 2022

Eastport

Carol Elizabeth McElarney, 74, of Eastport passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 31, 2022 after a long illness.  In addition to her husband, Frederick (Rick) Metell, she is survived by her daughter, Mia Metell, her sister Jean Bagnaschi and her husband Charles, her nephews Luke and Nathan, her brother – in -law Michael Metell, niece Samantha Metell nephew Matthew Metell, her niece Erin Bishop and nephew Josh Stone and many wonderful friends.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 31, 1948, she was the younger daughter of Eileen (Rush) and Harold McElarney.  She very much appreciated growing up in the vibrant multicultural environment of Cambridge and fully embraced the lessons of her family’s values of activism and fairness for important causes.  She attended the Cambridge School of Weston where she thrived in the creative and nurturing learning environment there.  After graduation Carol attended the University of New Hampshire to study animal husbandry and went on to receive her RN degree from Cape Cod Community College and worked at several hospitals in Massachusetts.  Shortly after marrying Rick in 1987, they moved to Pembroke, Maine where her daughter Mia Eileen was born. Carol worked for many years as a nurse at Calais Regional Hospital until her retirement.

Carol cared deeply for her family, friends, all animals, especially her 2 “puppies” and the environment. For the last several years Carol bravely faced serious health issues and endured many, often lengthy hospitalizations.  Amazingly she rarely complained despite the seriousness of her illnesses. Carol was the person who put everyone else above herself and always found the good in every person she met.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at a later date in the spring. Donations in Carol’s memory may be sent to Hospice, Community Health and Counseling Services of Bangor, Maine at P.O Box 425, Bangor, ME 04402-0425.  Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
