Catherine was born in Columbia Falls, June 2, 1931, daughter of the late Frank and Bessy (Reed) Hartford. She was employed for many years as a nurse’s aide with Down East Community Hospital in Machias. Catherine enjoyed fishing, playing Beano, cards, and dancing. She was predeceased by her first husband, Bernard Hammond Sr.; her second husband, Frank Handy; and a brother, Norman “Pud” Hartford. Surviving are her son, Pastor Bernard Hammond Jr. and wife Hazel of Baileyville and Columbia Falls; a step-son, Parris Hammond Sr. and wife Sarah of Columbia; two brothers, Keith “Pete” Hartford and wife Arlene of Gouldsboro, and Lloyd “Jack” Hartford and wife Lois of Ellsworth; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Hartford of Columbia Falls; a granddaughter, Terry Fitzhenry and husband Allan of Cutler; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Rae and Abby Catherine Fitzhenry; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrington with her son, Pastor Bernie Hammond officiating. Kay took great pride in her son’s decision to have a second career as a pastor, so in lieu of flowers, donations in Kay’s memory may be made to a United Methodist Church of your choice.
