Eastport – C. Paul Bush Jr., 89, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, July 02, 2013 at his home surrounded by family. Paul was born in Lake City, FL, son of the late Charles and Anna Lee (Calhoun) Bush. At the age of 8 he started to work on the family dairy farm in Florida until the age of 14 when the family moved to Georgia.
After graduating from high school, Paul was drafted into the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Ormsby and also in Auckland, New Zealand. He was sent by the Navy to Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1944. After the war Paul furthered his education at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, earning his Master’s Degree in Divinity in 1950. Paul became an ordained Congregational/United Church of Christ Minister and served as Pastor for many churches throughout the years, including the Federated church in Brooklin, CT, Elm Street Congregational Church in Southbridge, MA, First Congregational Church in Billerica, MA, First Congregational Church in Rutland, MA, and Packachoag Community Church in Auburn, MA. He also served as Chaplain at Rutland Heights Hospital in Rutland, MA, as the Executive Director for Colony Retirement Home in MA, and was the owner and operated of Presidential Realty in Eastport. Paul enjoyed attending meals at the senior center in Eastport, attending church, and riding around Eastport on his scooter looking for coins. Above all, Paul always said that the best enjoyment in his life was sharing in the parenthood of his 8 children.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son Phillip Calhoun Bush; three brothers, Frank, Russell, and Winston; and a sister Anna Lee. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Elizabeth (Bundeff) Bush; seven children, David Bush of Portsmouth, NH, Deborah Manning of Athol, MA, Dr. Stephen Bush of Conway, SC, Pamela Jubinville and her husband Michael of Leicester, MA, Michele Thompson of Eastport, David Bakis of Bogota, Colombia, and Capt. Matthew Bakis and his wife Julie of Eastport; five grandchildren, Jesse Manning and his wife Missy of Athol, MA, Zavier and Zoe Morales of Leicester, MA, and Tucker and Elsa Thompson of Eastport; one great-grandson Beau Manning of Athol, MA; two sisters, Gloria Pickle and her husband Coleman of McDonough, GA, and Betty Harper of Hazelhurst, GA; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home – Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., Eastport. A celebration of Paul’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Blakey United Methodist Church, 74 High St., Eastport. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s memory may be made to Blakey United Methodist Church, PO Box 104, Eastport, ME 04631, Eastport Senior Center, Boynton St., Eastport, ME 04631, or to a charity of one’s choice.
