Calais – Charles William Casey Jr, 85, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Down East Community Hospital in Machias. Charlie was born in St. Stephen, NB on December 29, 1929, son of the late Charles and Florence (Kelly) Casey. During the 8th grade his father became ill and Charlie quit school and worked for St. Croix Paper Company to support the family. In January, 1951, Charlie entered the US Air Force where he served with the 315th Troop Carrier refueling wing at Brady Air Force Base. Following his service, in 1954 he move to Chicago for two years and worked for Stoffer’s Restaurant in the Prudential Building. Upon the death of his father Charlie returned home and attended Mansfield Academy in Boston and Washington County Community College. He owned and operated Town & Country Beauty Salon in Baileyville until 1964, at which time he became a pipefitter for the paper company, retiring in 1993. Charlie was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais, served on the Board of Cosmetology from 1969-1978 and served as a Maine State Senator in 1965 and 1966 with the 102nd Legislature. He joined the Masonic lodge in 1979 and Anah Temple Shrine in 1980, where in 1996 he joined the clown unit. Charlie was known as Jazz the Clown and enjoyed bringing smiles and happiness to children during festivals and parades. He was an honorary member of Luxor Temple in Saint John, NB, and a life member of St. Mark’s Lodge A.F. & A.M. in St. Andrews.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by a son, Charles Casey III, and his two brothers, Gerald Francis, and his twin brother Edward Casey. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Virginia Casey of St. Andrews, NB; a nephew Charles Edward Casey and his wife Heather of Saint John, NB; a great-nephew Dallas Casey; special friend Dot Glass of Calais and her family; and numerous friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais with Father Rob Lupo, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
