Charles Joseph Holland

Calais - Charles Holland, 67, died in a Machias nursing home, January 20, 2006, following a long illness. He was born in Whitneyville on January 4, 1939. He attended school in Machais and graduated from the University of Maine at Machias. Charlie was a beloved teacher in the Calais school system until he decided to change careers and left to work for the US Immigration Service in 1970 where he was employed until he retired in 1999. Charlie enjoyed sports, he was a volunteer referee at the recreation center and also officiated many high school games. He refereed for 25 years, averaging at times 40 games per season and officiated at 11 Eastern Maine Championships in Bangor and one state final. Charlie has been described as "fast afoot, courageous and bold" during his refereeing career. He enjoyed lobster fishing and spent many hours on the water with close friends Louis Bernardini and Bob Black. He was a member of the Calais Lions Club and also loved to spend time at a camp during hunting season with friends Kerry Pinette and Bruce Mulholland. He was a friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed by many people. Charlie was predeceased by his parents Michael and Nellie Holland of Whitenyville and by a brother James Holland of Milford, NH. He is survived by daughter and son in law Jennifer & Joseph Fernandez, granddaughter Ally Fernandez all of Portland; son and daughter in law Michael & Jessica Holland of Buxton, sister Eleanor Worcester of Machais, sister Nancy Holland of Whitneyville, sister Joyce Holland of Whitneyville, brother John Holland of Jonesboro, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor Dana Kadey officiating.
