Clifton E Smith Sr.

Pleasant Point – Clifton E. Smith Sr., 78, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home. Clifton was born in Perry on December 29, 1930, son of the late Roy and Dorothy (Call) Smith. He married Frances Bassett on Feb. 26, 1952. Clifton like to stay busy farming, making wreaths, clamming, being the “local taxi”, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances; three sons, Robert, Stephen and Baby; a granddaughter Angel; and three great-grandchildren, Derek, Michael and Andrea. Surviving are his step-mother, Annie Smith; his children, Margaret “Dolly” Apt and her husband Forrest, Clifton Smith Jr. and his companion Rachael Nicholas, Bill Smith and his companion Dalejo Longfellow and David Francis III and his wife Heather, all of Pleasant Point, Barbara Newell and her companion Jim Moore of Pembroke, Katharine Smith and her companion Wayne Clossey of Dennysville, Ralph Smith of Perry, Ruby Griffin and her husband Mike of Whiting, Lisa Dana and her husband Rick of South Portland, Holly Smith and her companion Willie Suddy of Eastport, and Lynn Smith-Neptune of Perry; two brothers, Robert “Doug” Brackett and his companion Madge of Calais, and Ernest Smith Sr. of Lubec; a sister Gracie Davis and her husband Chester of Pleasant Point; 41 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; brothers-in-law, Joseph “Lane” Bassett and George "Jike" Bassett II, both of Pleasant Point; an “adopted son” Reginald Stanley of Pleasant Point; many nieces and nephews; and special family friends Mike and Justina Niles of Alexander, and Harold and Shirley McPhail of Perry. Visiting hours will be held at his home, 48 Passamaquoddy Road, Pleasant Point beginning 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, until 10 a.m. Monday. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Tribal Cemetery, Pleasant Point.
