Baileyville – Clowes “Spike” Saunders Jr. passed away in Bangor on Nov. 29th, 2007. Clowes was born in Baileyville to Gertrude and Clowes Saunders Sr. on June 2, 1928. He attended local schools and graduated from Woodland High. Spike moved to Greenfield, Mass. where he met and married Mary Elizabeth Hoyt. They were married for 59 years. He was employed by Bond Bread, Cushman Bakery and Rice Oil. Clowes retired in 1983. In 1993, Spike and his wife returned to Baileyville to live. He resided there until his death. Surviving are his wife Mary; three children, Pamela Peramba of Greenfield, Mass., Michael Saunders of Vernon, VT, and Luann Smith of Jaffrey, NH; grandchildren, Kimberly Mailloux and Elizabeth Zantouliadis; three step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private service will be held for the family next spring in Greenfield, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clowes’ memory may be made to People’s United Methodist Church, 86 Summit St., Baileyville, ME 04694. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais.
