Perry – Curtis Kenneth Probert, 93, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 14, 2013. Ken was born in Norwood, MA on May 16, 1920. In 1936, at the age of 16, he was able to receive his chauffer’s license. He graduated from Boston Trade School and entered the U.S. Navy serving during WWII with Patrol Bombing Squadron 144 patrolling the Pacific Ocean, as well as with the Ventura Bombers as a tail gunner in 1944. In December, 1945, Ken completed his enlistment and returned home and worked as a tool & die maker for Pratt Whitney, worked as a heavy equipment operator on the missile silos in Colorado, drove truck for Knutsen, and most of his life was an owner/operator truck driver. During his life Ken also trained horses and dogs, operated a large pig farm, enjoyed racing cars and motorcycles, and was proud to have completed the Hill Climb in 1936 at Laconia, NH. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, DAV, and the Local 4 Operating Engineer Union.
Ken was predeceased by a daughter, Claudia Ann “Cappy” Probert; and his two brothers Odey and Boots. Surviving are his wife Antoinette (London) Probert of Perry; four children, Burr Probert and wife Nanette of Stonington, CT, Garrett Probert of Wolfboro, NH, C. Fox Probert and companion Andrea Dana of Pembroke, and Sally Spenard and husband Arthur of Washington, DC; six step-children, Charles Hoff and wife Teri of Rumford, Cathrine Preston and companion Peter Kennison of Sumner, Colleen Warner and husband Greg of Bethel, Thomas Hoff and wife Darlene of Rumford, Maureen Ilsley and husband Robert of West Paris, and Joseph Hoff and wife Heather of West Paris; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Lou; and a cousin Bruce Probert.
A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring at Restlawn Cemetery in Perry. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais.
