Obituary for David Anthony Francis

Pleasant Point – David Anthony Francis Sr., 99, ewepi kci-spomkik naka Keluwosit Friday, February 26, 2016 at Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. David was born in Pleasant Point on January 23, 1917, son of the late John and Mary (Sabattus) Francis. He attended school at St. Anne’s in Pleasant Point and graduated from Shead High School. David entered the US Army and served during WWII. After his service he returned home and married Marion Neptune on May 19, 1949.

David did carpentry work as well as picking blueberries and potatoes, was the maintenance person for Dr. Bates, Guilford Industries, and eventually worked with the Pleasant Point Tribal Government helping preserve the Passamaquoddy Language. He was instrumental in getting a comprehensive Passamaquoddy Dictionary published, earning him an Honorary PhD with the University of Maine at the age of 91. David enjoyed collecting coins and cans, going for walks, helping at the Pleasant Point Museum, and sharing his stories and experiences.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, David Francis Jr.; a daughter Mary Theresa Altvater; grandson Majik Francis; two brothers Sabatus and Leo; and two sisters, Susie and Evelyn. Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Marion Francis; nine children, John Francis of Pleasant Point, Christina Georgantis and husband Robert Sr. of Pleasant Point, Martin Francis and wife Cyril of Pleasant Point, Michael Francis and wife Kathy of Calais, Paul Francis and wife Viola of Pleasant Point, Merlin Francis and wife Lori of Orono, Susan Leighton and husband Tom of Brewer, Noel Francis of Pleasant Point, and Clarie Ohmeis and husband James of Southwest Harbor; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Andrew Dana of Pleasant Point; sister-in-law Clara Polches of Fredericton, NB; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will begin 11 a.m. Sunday, February 28, 2016 at David’s home, 4 Middle Road, Pleasant Point, until Tuesday at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Kevin Martin 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at St. Joseph R.C. Church in Eastport. Burial with military honors will follow in the Tribal Cemetery, Pleasant Point. Koselomol naka apcoc knomiyul. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
