Calais – David “Fuzzy” Leland Townsend, 89, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Calais Regional Hospital. Fuzzy was born in Calais on October 18, 1926, son of Wray and Geneva (Constantine) Townsend. He graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1943, and worked at Tracy’s Garage until starting a career as an electrician. He was an operator at St. Croix Electric Co. for several years and later for Bangor Hydro in Eastport. Fuzzy owned and operated a small engine repair shop, selling the first chainsaw in Washington County. He then sold the shop and became a civilian employee for the U.S. Air Force, working as the Chief Engineer of Utilities for Topsham Air Force Base, and later at the Air Force base in Bangor. On November 7, 1957, he married his love, Mary Catherine O’Brien. Eventually Fuzzy and Mary returned to Calais where he worked for Georgia Pacific as an electrician until his retirement.
He was a member of the Calais United Methodist Church and enjoyed building model engines, working in his machine shop, motorcycles, fishing and hunting. While building steam and gas model engines, Fuzzy won many awards and his engines were sought after by many.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary Townsend; and his two sisters. Surviving are his five children, David Townsend and wife Marjorie of Calais, Debbie Townsend of Calais, Diane Munroe and husband George of St. Stephen, NB, Daphne Boles and companion Larry of St. Stephen, NB, and Darin Townsend of Calais; six grandchildren, Heather, Joey, Mary, Jodi, David and George; five great-grandchildren, Lydia, Shawn, Christopher, Brody and Bryson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held in Calais Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
