Obituary for Dennis Maurice Cline

Eastport - Dennis (“Denny”) M. Cline died Saturday, July 23 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was born in Eastport June 16, 1939, the son of Ryder H. and Kathleen (Owen) Cline. He graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1957 and from Washington State Teachers’ College in 1961. Denny taught and coached at elementary and junior high schools in Garland and Medway. He also held various youth coaching positions over the years.

Following his teaching career, he held a variety of interesting jobs, including driving for Harris Baking Company, working at the Best Stop convenience store in Calais, and most recently working for the Quoddy Tides newspaper as a driver and owning his own business, Mainely Flowers in Eastport.

Denny was a big sports fan, following many high school teams and the UMO hockey team, but his major love was baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox. He visited many major league ball parks around the country and in recent years enjoyed an annual baseball bus tour that included games at Fenway Park, Camden Yards, and the Rogers Center in Toronto, among others.

Denny was a member of the Border Historical Society and the Eastport Garden Club and was always on the lookout for a new addition to his beautiful flower gardens. He was also proud of his cultivated raspberry patch and had a friendly rivalry with several Eastport friends to see who could harvest the most berries in a season.

Denny was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Jill Cline, of Farmingdale; an aunt, Madonna Warzala of Cohoes, NY; an uncle, Winston Cline and wife Janet of Campobello, NB; several cousins; and his beloved cat, Morris, who was his devoted companion. He will also be missed by many friends in Eastport and beyond, who enriched Denny’s life with their kindness and care. They will certainly miss his challenging banter, along with his kindness and caring ways.

Visiting hours will be at the Mays Funeral Home-Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., in Eastport on Wednesday, July 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Flagg Chapel on Thursday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in memory of Denny to the PAWS Animal Shelter, PO Box 182, Calais, ME 04619 (www.paws-calais.com) or the American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074 (www.heart.org), or to Sunrise County Dialysis, 19 Vanasse Rd., Eastport, ME 04631.
