Obituary for Donald Eugene Cushing

Pembroke – Donald Eugene Cushing, 83, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010 at his home in Pembroke. Donald was born in Pembroke on April 16, 1926, son of the late Clarence and Hazel (Gove) Cushing. After attending the Pembroke High School, Donald entered the U.S. Army, serving in WWII with the 182nd Infantry, Americal Division. While in the Philippines, he earned the Purple Heart. After serving his country, Donald returned home and worked for the Merle Corporation in Eastport until beginning his career with Bangor Hydro in 1950, where he retired following 29 years of service. He married Dora H. Redding on August 2, 1947 in Pembroke. Donald was never idle. He enjoyed his retirement fishing, hunting, gardening, doing carpentry work, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Cobscook Post #59, V.F.W. Passamquoddy Memorial Post #11299 and Dennys River Sportsman Club. In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Cushing; two sisters, Laura Daggett and Norma Sears; and three brothers, Stanley, Merrill and Clayton Cushing. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Dora Cushing; five children, Donna Preston and her husband Calvin of Dennysville, Darlene Preston of Pembroke, Frank Cushing and his wife Lynn of Orrington, Wayne Cushing of Pembroke and his companion Muriel Randall, who has also been Donald’s special loving caregiver for the last several months. To her his family is grateful;, and Helene Blanchard and her husband John of Pembroke; two sisters, Carolyn Clement of Pembroke and Sandra Rodgers and her companion Wayne Caldwell of Leesburg, FL; two brothers, Vernon Cushing and his wife Faye of Pembroke and Ralph Cushing and his wife Brenda of Pembroke; seventeen grandchildren, Dean Preston of Pembroke, Wendy McKim and her husband Tony of Trenton, Chad Preston and his wife Kim of Dedham, Michelle Orr of N.H., Stacie Hunter and her husband Joey of Pembroke, Leslie Cushing and her companion Albert Wallace of Pembroke, Kenneth Cushing of Pembroke, Donald Preston and his companion Traci Sheldon of Levant, Bobbie Ritchie and her husband Tony of Pembroke, Travis Cushing and his wife Darlene of Eddington, Tabitha Griffin and her husband Corey of Cutler, Laurie Cates and her husband Josh of Cutler, Nicholas Cushing and his wife Leigh of Cypress, TX, Zackery Cushing of Orrington, Megan Cushing of Orrington, Michael Cushing of OK, and Mark Cushing of VT; 31 great-grandchildren, Cody and Holly Preston, Tyler, Kyle, Keegan and Chase McKim, Allison, Macayla and Jacob Preston, Mariah, Trevor and Tyler Orr, Taylor Cushing, Tori and Dylan Cushing, Mason and Landon Ritchie, Joshua Kelsey, Christopher and Matthew Cushing, Emma and Ben Griffin, Lucas, Avery and Max Cates, Jakob Cushing, Cole Cushing, Matthew and Liam Cushing, and Samara and Sawyer Cushing; and many nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by the many “adoptive” children he has welcomed into the family over the many years, both from here and across the border, including the Sinnicks family, Kelly Goulet, Linda and Barb, just to name a few. He is truly loved and will be missed by us all. A celebration of Donald’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at the Iron Works Methodist Church, Little Falls Road, Pembroke. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
