Indian Township – Donald Richard Newell, 57, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 at a Bangor hospital. Donald was born in Calais on August 12, 1963, son of Theodore Gaudet and Martha Newell.
Donald graduated from Calais High School, Class of 1982. He started his career working in the woods until attending Washington County Vocational Technical Institute, earning his welding degree. Donald worked in Chicago to complete his welding training but his love for the outdoors led him to return to the logging industry. Donald and was avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, trapping, fishing and playing Bingo.
Donald was proud of his Passamaquoddy heritage. With his great creative and artistic abilities, Donald made Native American walking sticks and medicine sticks. He also could make art of just about anything. His Native American arts with rocks were shown in several museums throughout the Northeast.
In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by his sister, Myra Newell and grandparents Irene and Lewey Dana. Surviving are his five children, Lewey Harnois of Indian Township, D Harnois of Indian Township, Martha Bassett and husband Victor of Indian Island, Anthony Newell and companion Andrea Wilson of Old Town, and Reena Newell and companion Cecil Stanley of Indian Township; seven grandchildren, Lewey Jr., Rylan, Wsali, Allaina, Tiberius, Ruby and Kiarrah; his brother Dale Newell of Indian Township; nephew Dale Newell II and wife Heidi of Calais; many other nieces and nephews; and his canine companion Muwin.
Visitation will be held at Donald’s home, 72 US Route 1, Indian Township, from 5 p.m. Thursday, January 14 until 10 a.m. Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Kevin J. Martin, 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16 at the Indian Township Bingo Hall. Burial will follow in the Tribal Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
