Calais - Dorothy Eva Hunt Dwelley passed peacefully from this life June 4th 2013 at her home with her loving family by her side. Dorothy was born in Burnham, Maine Dec 9 1921, the daughter of Arnold and Etta (Cole) Hunt.
She attended Burnham schools and graduated from Clinton High School.
Dorothy married her devoted and loving husband, Harvard W. Dwelley on Sept. 4, 1950. She was pre-deceased by her husband, her parents, her sister Virginia Wright, her brother Alan Hunt, Brothers in law Donald Wright, Paul and Dana Dwelley, James (Buster) Holmes, Orris Cousins and Fletcher MacLeod Sisters in law Ruth Hunt, Erma Hunt, Rowena Dwelley, Marian Cousins, Velma MacLeod, Blanche Holmes, Jean Dwelley, Hazel Dwelley and nephew Roy Dwelley.
Dorothy is survived by her son Alan and his wife Candace, her daughter Jane DelMonaco and husband Bill, granddaughter Allyson Reichenau and her husband Cody, Grandson Anthony DelMonaco, step-grandson Joshua Johnston and partner James Williams, great-granddaughters Isabelle and Addyson Reichenau, brother, Robert Hunt, nephews Jim Wright and his wife Diane, Arnie Elkins and wife Vicki, Robert Hunt, Todd, Bruce and Alan Hunt, James Holmes and wife Sue, David Holmes and wife Kathy, Lloyd Thomas Dwelley and wife Marilyn, Gary Dwelley, nieces,Wendy Wright-Swiger, Judith Ladd, Carol McCann and husband Raymond, Susan Hale and husband Blake, Becky Hunt, Kristin Littlefield, Donna Richardson and Linda Tarr, Bev Morrison and husband David, Vivian Perkins and husband Carl, cousin Helen Dwelley and many great nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was a member of the Women's Army/Air Force Corp. W.A.A.C. during World War II. Her basic training was at Fort Oglethorpe GA and she was stationed in Fort Worth TX. She was extremely proud of her service to her country and at age 89 participated in a service honoring Maine Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Upon discharge in 1946, Dorothy moved to Calais where she met her husband and raised their family. Dorothy worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Thomas and later as a postal clerk in Baileyville where she retired in 1977. In her retirement years, she and Harvard spent time at their home in Zephyrhills, Florida where they made many friends and enjoyed those friendships, golfing, biking and shuffleboard.
Dorothy was a communicant at St. Anne's Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and a supporter of the St. Croix #1 Firehouse Restoration project. Dorothy was an avid NASCAR, Boston Red Sox and Maine Hockey fan. But most of all, Dorothy's life was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as being a loving, devoted and hard-working wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.
Visiting hours will be at Mays Funeral Home 26 Church St. Calais from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Friday, June 7th. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anne's Episcopal Church at 29 Church St. in Calais Saturday June 8th at 1pm with Pastor Jennifer Reece and former pastor, David Sivret officiating. There will be full military honors at the Calais Cemetery following the service. Donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to St. Croix No. 1 Fire House, PO Box 605, Calais, ME 04619, or to a charity of one's choice.
