Calais – Dorothy Evelyn Goodine, 87, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020 at her home surrounded by family. She was born on September 4, 1933, daughter of Arthur and Florence (Pomeroy) Wheelock. Evelyn, as she was referred to by most who knew her, was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Paul Libby; her second husband Paul Goodine; son James Libby; brother Gary Wheelock; and her sister Helen Pike.
Evelyn was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Calais United Methodist Church. She worked hard from a young age, graduating early and purchasing her first, and current, home at the age of 18 for $600. She also worked hard to provide for her four children on her own.
Evelyn was most remembered for working at the Ware Knitters and Treworgy Pharmacy. The Ware Knitters is where “Mrs. Mason” made her first debut. If you were lucky enough to be in either Evelyn’s or Mrs. Mason’s presence, then you were lucky enough. Evelyn was kind hearted, reserved, compassionate, a dedicated employee, a loyal friend, and one heck of a ball player according to her classmates. Mrs. Mason, on the other hand, was far from reserved. She was the life of many parties. She brought instant smiles and infinite laughter to all in attendance. Mrs. Mason made numerous appearances for lots of occasions over the years and will never be forgotten.
Evelyn was survived by her siblings, Janet Haley, Florence Johnson and Paul Wheelock; her children, Paula Dunne, Charlie Libby and wife Wanda, and Lisa Thornton and husband Clifford; stepchildren, Michael Goodine and wife Jeannie and their families, and David Goodine and wife Kathy and their families; several nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sincere thanks to the best hospice nurse, Melanie Howard. Her gentle and compassionate personality makes this difficult process a little easier. Also, a special thanks to Martha Pratt for her exceptional care, dedication and never-ending compassion.
Due to COVID restrictions, services will be private for immediate family only. Burial will be held in the Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
