Dorothy G Whelpley

EASTPORT – Dorothy G. Whelpley, 89, passed away in Eastport on September 3, 2010 with family by her side. She was born in Eastport on June 7, 1921 to Edward and Lillian (Harris) Wentworth. Dorothy attended the North End School on Capen Avenue and at a very young age went to work in the various sardine factories until her retirement in 1969. Dorothy loved caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking her favorites for them such as her nut cake, fish chowder, baked macaroni and cheese and chicken with dumplings along with many others without using a recipe. Dorothy married Cecil P. Whelpley on February 6, 1946, in Eastport. She was predeceased by him on April 9, 1969. She was also predeceased by all her siblings, Kathleen Brown, Donald Wentworth, Hazel Whalen, Ivan and Lloyd Wentworth. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley; 3 grandchildren, whom she helped raise, Jamie and his wife Terri, Debra and her husband Brian, and grandson Todd; 6 great-grandchildren Gerry Bassett and his wife Katie, Ryan Bassett and his wife Kyla, Leslie Burke and her husband Pat, Ashley Moore, Shelby and Whitney Bassett; 3 great-great grandchildren, Reagan, Elias, Micah; and many nieces and nephews and their families. Dorothy always had a great love of animals of all kinds. At Dorothy’s request, there will be a graveside service at Hillside Cemetery on Wednesday, September 8th at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Robert Hinton officiating.
