Meddybemps – Edna Donovan, 91, passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at home with her daughter by her side. Edna was born in Calais on April 14, 1922, daughter of the late Harold and Olive (Wade) Stanhope. She graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1939, and worked at the local pharmacy and Ware Knitters until attending beautician school in Bangor. Edna owned and operated her own beauty salon for several years. On May 3, 1946, she married her love, Philip Donovan. Edna was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Rebekah Lodge, and enjoyed knitting, pets, traveling, and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Edna was predeceased by her husband Philip; a daughter Linda Ross; and a nephew Peter Donovan. Surviving are her daughter Melva Long of Alexander; two grandchildren, Lee Roderick of Meddybemps, and Jessica Melhiser of Alexander; four great-grandchildren, Mallory and Alex Roderick, and Ashley and Ryan Melhiser; son-in-law John Ross of Guntersville, AL; sister-in-law Marion Lagel of South Windsor, CT; nephews Wayne, David, Gregory and Louis Donovan; a special cousin, Wayne Harmon; many cousins and friends; and her canine companion Tuffy.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 29, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.
