Obituary for Edna Fern Hood

Baileyville – Edna Fern Hood, 100, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2012 in Hancock. Edna was born in Alexander on June 13, 1912, daughter of the late Fay and Bertha (Cheney) McArthur. After graduating from Woodland High School, Class of 1930, she taught school while attending Normal School during the summers. Edna taught in many of the local rural schools including Hale School, South Princeton, Four Corners, East Ridge, Codyville and Dixie. On June 25, 1950, she married John Hood in Calais. She retired in 1951 to raise her two daughters, Denise and Winona. During her retirement, Edna stayed active as a seamstress in Baileyville, making wedding and prom gowns, suits, alterations, etc, until the early 1990’s. Edna was a member of People’s United Methodist Church in Baileyville and the Maine Teachers Assoc. She was one of the last remaining teachers in Maine to be awarded a Life Time Teaching Certificate. In addition to her parents, Edna was predeceased by her loving husband John; a daughter Winona Hood; stepdaughter Geraldine Barter; stepson Richard Hood; son-in-law Gregory Annis; three brothers, Ben, Lawrence and Carroll McArthur; and her two sisters, Florence Shain and Eva Sadler. Surviving are her daughter Denise Annis and her companion Royce Gordon Sr. of Baileyville; stepchildren Lawrence Hood of Baileyville and John Hood of Ellsworth; stepdaughter-in-law Marion Hunnewell of Baileyville; a brother John McArthur of Baileyville; two grandchildren, Tracy Annis-Cohen and her husband Jeffrey of Las Vegas, NV, and Becky Boudrow and her husband James of Corinth, VT; 23 step grandchildren; 20 step great-grandchildren; and numerous step great-great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Edna’s life will be held 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with one of her former students, Rolfe Flood, officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Baileyville.
