Calais – Edward H. Cline, 86, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at his home in Calais. Edward was born in Lubec on March 9, 1927, son of the late Charles and Maude (McDowell) Cline.
Edward left high school to enter the U.S. Army Air Corps to serve his country during WWII. He then returned home and graduated from Lubec High School attended the University of Maine at Orono until reentering the U.S. Air Force, serving in records and reports for air terminals. On September 1951, he married Edna Farmer of Lubec. In 1955 Edward started his insurance career with John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., serving as a sales representative in Fitchburg, MA and Bangor. In 1962 he started with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as a sales representative throughout Washington County until 1986. In 1987 he worked as a collections manager for St. Croix Federal Credit Union until he retired in 1989. Edward loved to stay active in his community. He served as a member of the Maine Governor’s Task Force on Child and Youth Services, the Calais School Committee Union #106 where he served as Committee Chairman from 1979 to 1980, Board of Director for St. Croix Vocational Center in St. Stephen, NB, Board of Director of Washington County Handicapped Program for the Beckett Center in Calais and Sunshine Workshop in Machias, was an advocate for handicapped persons in local nursing homes, Board of Director for Thelma Kilpatrick School in St. Stephen, NB, served as a Washington County Commissioner, served on the Calais City Council, and was a member of Washington Lodge #37 A.F. & A.M. in Lubec.
In addition to his parents, Edward was predeceased by his loving wife Edna; and two brothers, Ronald and Wilfred. Surviving are his companion Nola Hough of Calais; ten children, Cathryn Mitchell of Bath, Rebecca Harding of Calais, Christopher Cline of Calais, Michael Cline of Phippsburg, Timothy Cline and his fiancé Cheryl Frechette of Windham, Wendy McBride and her husband Daniel of St. Stephen, Clare Cline and her husband Elliott “Chip” Miller of Yarmouth, Lori Ellis and her husband Michael of Calais, Peter Cline and his wife Brandi of Calais, and Lisa Cline of Casco; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and two on the way; his sister Mary Coggins and her husband Jed of North Lubec; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Edward’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St., Calais. The committal service will be held in the spring with military honors at Green Acres Cemetery in Lubec.
