Edward D “Ed” Poitras, 89 passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s at Calais Community Hospital on November 22, 2023. Edward was born on May 30th, 1934 in Portland Maine, the son of Irene Lasher.
As soon as he could he started serving his country, serving in the Marine Corps, and was stationed at Subic Bay Philippines for a time. Prior to enlisting in the Marines, he served in the Army National Guard. He worked at the SD Warren Mill in Westbrook Maine then finished out his career at Georgia Pacific chip and sawmill in Woodland.
On November 28th, 1968, he married Patricia Benner, and settled in Edmunds Maine shortly thereafter. He was full of fun, a true jokester, you never knew what he was going to say, what joke he would tell or what prank he would pull. Every April fool’s day we all had to be on the lookout. His smile and twinkle in his eye lit up the room, he was a genuine good man, a proud father, Pepere and Marine.
In Ed’s early years you could find him diving off the cliffs in the Westbrook/Portland area. He enjoyed bowling, pool games, golfing and playing any type of card games. Every chance he got you would find him on the greens at Herring Cove Golf course on Campobello Island Canada. When not on the course he could be found playing any type of card game, his favorite being cribbage with the guys and later his grandson Richard. He loved playing hand and foot with his daughter whenever he got a chance, of course no game was played without a wager on the table no matter who it was and what game it was 😊. He was an active member of the American Legion, VFW and Marine Corps League until he was unable to participate in the activities.
Ed loved his family dearly, spending time with his daughter, son-in-law and grandkids. He could be found teaching his little buggers how to play cribbage, taking them on rides or walks, and just hang out with them watching tv and drinking Moxie. Ed had many many nicknames, Easy Ed, Cue Ball, Eddie, but his favorite was Dad & Pepere.
Ed was predeceased by his wife of 47 years Patricia, his mother Irene and stepfather Jervis Lasher, sister Diane Cavanaugh, Brother-in-law Ralph Merrill, Uncle Oscar Poitras, Mother & Father-in-law Phyllis & Carl Benner.
Ed is survived by his only daughter and very special son-in-law Nicole (Nikki) & Richard (Dickie) Two grandchildren Richard & Brady Seeley “Pepere’s pride and Joys” all of Calais Maine. Two sisters, Winnifred Merrill of Naples Florida, and Georgette Sutter of Westbrook Maine. Many nieces and nephews, and special friend Diane Richendollar of Calais Maine.
Ed’s family would like to take a moment to thank the staff at Washington Place (2016-2021) and Eastport Memorial Nursing Home (2021-2023) for their kindness, compassion, care and support over the past 7 years. Thank you to all the staff that have become family. All too often caregivers are seen as just that, but they are so much more, they are family. To the staff at Calais Community Hospital, thank you for your Kindness and compassion each and every time especially during dad’s journey.
A graveside service will be held at a later time for family and friends with burial at the Dennysville Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made in Ed’s Memory to the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home 23 Boynton St Eastport ME 04631. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
