Calais – Eleanor Louise Baker, 92, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Eleanor was born in Pembroke, Maine, daughter of the late Edward and Lora (Brown) Sawyer. After graduating from Pembroke High School, she met her love, William “Bill” Baker, and together they were united in marriage. Once their children reached school age, Eleanor went to work for Hathaway Shirt Factory in Calais, at a shoe factory, and in later years for Barnard’s Nursing Home. Eleanor loved the outdoors and enjoyed snowmobiling with Bill and going out to eat with family.
In addition to her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill; and nine siblings, Cecil, Ellis, Joe, Roy, Alton, Clayton, Ken, Essie Carter, and Myrtle James. Surviving are her two children, Doreen Gruber of Englewood, FL, and Michael Baker and wife Diane of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Frost of FL, Joel Frost of CA, and Carrie Gruber of FL; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Smith and husband Donald of OK; two great-great grandchildren, Lianna and Oran Smith; her sister Florence Hatton of Charlotte; three sisters-in-law, Ann Baker of Calais, and Thursa and Ruth Sawyer of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2016 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.
