CALAIS - Eleanor Carolyn (Mundie) O'Neill passed away peacefully Jan. 6, 2013, surrounded by her family at a Bangor hospital. She was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Philadelphia, only child of Perley J. Mundie, M.D., and Katherine (Johnson) Mundie, R.N.
She graduated from Calais Academy in 1941; attended Colby College, Waterville; and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, cum laude, in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She obtained her master's degree in special education and taught students in Southington, Conn., for 18 years. She moved to Connecticut in 1951, living in Wallingford, New Britain and Southington. She and Ron returned to Calais, their hometown, in 1991. She was a member of Calais United Methodist Church, Calais Regional Hospital Auxiliary, National Education Association and Alexander-Crawford, Calais and Charlotte County historical societies. She was a volunteer at Calais Food Pantry for many years.
Eleanor is survived by her husband of almost 66 years, Ronald O'Neill of Calais; and their three children, Jane C. Stewart and husband, Frank, of Glastonbury, Conn., Patrick J. O'Neill and wife, Mary-Rose, of Southwick, Mass., and Kitty Davis O'Neill of Bath. She also leaves her beloved grandsons, Jay Stewart and wife, Nicole, Tom Stewart, Patrick and Sean O'Neill and John and James Davis; and great-granddaughters, Cameron and Lacey Stewart. Eleanor will be missed by two very dear, lifelong friends, Dr. Mary 'Vesta Marston Scott of Orono and Madge Campbell Orchard of Meddybemps; and cousin, Maxine Giberson of Houlton.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
