Obituary for Ellen Stanhope Howe

Cooper – Ellen Stanhope Howe, 83, passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at a Bangor hospital. Ellen was born in Calais on October 1, 1929, daughter of the late Norman and Mattie (Sweeney) Stanhope. She graduated from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1948, and married her love, John D. Howe on October 1, 1950 in Milltown. Ellen worked as a nurse’s assistant at Calais Regional Hospital for many years. She was a member of Orion Chapter #45 Order of the Eastern Star in Calais, TOPS in Baileyville, and the Cathance Grange. Ellen enjoyed scrapbooking, fishing, gardening, sewing, and most importantly, spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother, Norman K. Stanhope Jr.; a sister Joyce Morrell; and a son-in-law Richard Roberts. Surviving are her loving husband of 62 years, John D. Howe; four children, John F. Howe and his wife Valerie of Hampton, VA, Norman Howe and his wife Linda of Cooper, Cheryl Roberts of Yarmouth, and Laurie Tyler and her husband Glenn of Willington, CT; seven grandchildren, Julie Marquis and her husband Joe of Brunswick, Kenneth Howe of Virginia Beach, VA, Lacey Howe of Virginia Beach, VA, Cheri Siatris and her husband TJ of Harpswell, and Amanda, Eric and Colleen Tyler of Willington, CT; four step-grandchildren, Jennifer O’Neill and her husband Gregg of North Kingstown, R.I., Kelly DeAngelis and husband Steven of Somerville, MA, Kerri Roberts of Yarmouth, and Jessica Roberts of North Attelboro, MA; several great-grandchildren; and a niece, Elizabeth Clark of Lincolnville. Visiting hours will be held 6 – 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Meddybemps Christian Church, where a celebration of Ellen’s life will begin at 7 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring at the West Ridge Cemetery in Cooper. Donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 654 State St., Bangor, ME 04401.
