Obituary for Elsie Louise McGarrigle

Calais – Elsie Louise McGarrigle, 80, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Calais Regional Hospital. Elsie was born in Eastport on June 23, 1929, daughter of the late Edward and Carrie (Sutherland) Matthews. After graduating from Shead Memorial High School, she worked for M.A. Healey until she wed John P. “Jack” McGarrigle Jr. in 1953. After her marriage, Elsie began work for the Merrill Trust Company, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and finally Maine District Court where she retired as Clerk of Courts. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais, where she was a member of the Ladies Sodality for many years. Elsie loved to draw, knit, play card games, do jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and exploring local cemeteries. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Jack; and her son Richard “Dick” McGarrigle; a sister Harriet Kilby; and a brother Eugene Matthews. Elsie is survived by her loving daughters, Susan Esposito of Eastport and Diane Hunnewell and her husband Avery of Cooper; two granddaughters, Kathleen Esposito of Eastport and Halifax, N.S., and Bridget Hunnewell of Cooper; two brothers, Hollis Matthews of Eastport and Frank Matthews of Minnesota; a sister, Carolyn Sabattus of Brewer; two aunts, Elsie Clement and Mary Sutherland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
