Elsie Evelyn “Nannie” Monk, 99, passed away Friday, November 10, 2023, at Calais Community Hospital. Nannie was born in Princeton on August 22, 1924, daughter of Alonzo and Theresa (Wilson) Monk.
Elsie graduated from Princeton High School, Class of 1942. She moved to Connecticut where she worked in the defense factory as a ball bearing inspector. In 1944, she returned home to help take care of her mother. On November 29, 1947, she married her high school classmate, George W. Monk Jr. Nannie’s life centered around her family. In her younger years she enjoyed playing baseball with her children. Elsie also enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, and knitting.
In addition to her parents Alonzo and Theresa Monk, Elsie was predeceased by her beloved husband George Monk; granddaughter Senta Dwelley; daughter and son-in-law, Vona and Leon Bailey; son-in-law James McLaughlin; and her sisters, Sophia Seamans, Maxine Farley, and Grace Monk; and her brothers James, Sheldon, and Clarence Monk. Surviving are two children, Greg Monk and wife Elizabeth, and Vicki McLaughlin and David Peters; five grandchildren, April Free, Jamie McLaughlin and wife Marilyn, Melinda Burke, Amber Arbo and husband Scott, and Scott Monk and wife Leslie; nine great-grandchildren, Eric Free and wife Amy, Michael McLaughlin and wife Sarah, Ryan McIver and wife Taylor, Shain McIver and Nevaeh Thomas, Ethan Monk, Evan Monk, Kacie Burke and Matthew McLemore, Jeremy Burke and wife Kait, and Jacob Dwelley; six great-great grandchildren, Zelda, Natalie, Everett, twins Jonah and Hannah, and Melody; a special “son” Alton Duplisea; and many special nieces and nephews.
