Eastport – Ethel M. Hicks, 85, died Saturday, November 08, 2008 at a Bangor hospital with her family by her side. Ethel was born in Eastport on March 11, 1923, daughter of the late George and Vida (Calder) McIntyre. After graduating from Shead Memorial High School, she moved to Washington D.C., where she worked for the War Department at the Pentagon for several years before returning home to Eastport. In March of 1959, she married John Hicks in Eastport. Ethel owned and operated The Sunbeam Restaurant and The Coffee Shop and cooked for several local restaurants before her retirement. She was a life-long member of Christ Episcopal Church in Eastport; she will be remembered for her wedding cakes, great cooking, and her fish chowder and molasses cookies on the 4th of July. Ethel also was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, where she was a past president. One of Ethel’s proudest accomplishments was receiving the Outstanding Alumni Athlete Award for her 1940 State Champion woman’s basketball team at Shead Memorial High School. She enjoyed playing Bingo, scratch tickets, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Besides her parents, Ethel was predeceased by her husband, John Hicks; and two sisters, Mary O’Sullivan and Ruth Cheverie. Surviving are her three sons, Jack Hicks and his companion Tami of Lyman, Bill Hicks and his wife Nina of Minot, and Bobby Hicks and his wife Jennifer of Wells; a sister, Frances Finch of Eastport; a brother, Stanley McIntyre and his wife Barbara of Kittery; twelve grandchildren, Erin, Jacke, Jessica, Jenna, Shelby, Wyatt, Dylan, John, Owen, Althea, Ashley and Joshua; four great-grandchildren, Stanley, Kyle, Noah and Gunnar; a special niece, Mary Pottle of Eastport; and many nieces and nephews.
