Evelyn Eda Pottle (Flood)

Perry – Evelyn Pottle, wife of the late Harold Pottle, went to be with the Lord on August 31, 2007. Evelyn was born in Alexander on November 6, 1908, the youngest of ten children to Byron Lincoln Flood and Lizzie Perkins Flood. Evelyn attended school in Alexander and graduated from Calais Academy in 1927. She attended Washington State Normal School for Teachers and graduated in 1929. Evelyn started her teaching career in Charlotte and taught in the towns of Cooper, Alexander, Perry, Calais and Charlotte. Her favorite saying was “I love young people”. Her passion for teaching lasted 56 years. She tried to retire many times but they kept asking her back and finally as the age of 68, she retired from teaching. Evelyn was an active member of her community. She was a member of the Old Baptist Church in Perry and later the Congregational Church in Perry. For many years she was the clerk for the town of Perry. She also was a member and officer for 75 years at the Perry and Alexander Grange. Evelyn started the Perry Harvest Fair in which she entered many of her hand made quilts. She also entered her quilts at various other fairs and it wasn’t unusual for her to receive First, Second or Third place ribbons for her work. In 2006, Evelyn received the Boston Post Cane as the Town of Perry’s oldest citizen. Her commitment to teaching all those years did not go unrecognized. In April of 2006, she was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award from the Governor. She loved dancing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, rug making and sledding with her grandchildren. A special thanks to her devoted niece Thursa Sawyer for her companionship and support over the years. Also, the staff at the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home for all their care. Evelyn was a devoted wife of 44 years to her late husband, Harold, and together they had three children. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Bert, George and Raymond Flood; and seven sisters, Cora Flood Kinney, Marcia Flood Cousins, Etta Flood Cousins, Leta Flood Hatton, Geneva Flood Browers and Ethel Flood, her twin. She leaves three sons, Basil Pottle of Eastport, Merrill and Joy Pottle of Ellsworth, and Clifton and Nancy Pottle of Florida; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She will be missed dearly, but her legacy will live on for generations. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 Monday, September 3 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Perry Congregational Church in Perry. Burial will follow in Bay Side Cemetery (Pottle Cemetery) on Shore Rd. in Perry. In lieu of flowers, donations in Evelyn’s memory may be made to Perry Congregational Church, Shore Rd., Perry, ME 04667 or to the Perry Grange, S. Meadow Rd., Perry, ME 04667.
