Eastport – Fern Lois Kierstead Mitchell, 89, passed away Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home. Fern was born on Campobello Island, N.B. May 17, 1920, daughter of the late Merton and Viola (Langmaid) Newman. She attended the Wilson’s Beach area schools and married Basil Kierstead of Eastport. Basil passed in 1961 and Fern remarried in 1965 to David Mitchell. They moved to Massachusetts shortly after and worked for Black & Decker. Upon retiring, they moved back to Eastport in 1985. Fern was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband Basil Kierstead; her second husband David Mitchell; two sons, Russell Kierstead Sr. and Richard Kierstead; a grandson Glen Kierstead Jr.; three brothers, Percy, Winslow and Neil Newman; and a sister Katherine Stevenson. Surviving are three children, Stanley Kierstead of Westbrook, Glen Kierstead Sr. and his wife Jackie of Fort Collins, CO, and Robert Kierstead and his wife Rebecca of Eastport; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eileen Newman and Constance Fleet, both of Campobello Island, and Bellman Pendleton of Deer Island, NB; and many nieces and nephews.
