Florence Hatton (Sawyer)

Charlotte – Florence Evelyn Sawyer Hatton, 93, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 at her home in Charlotte. Florence was born at home in Pembroke on January 22, 1926, daughter of Edward and Lora (Brown) Sawyer.

Florence graduated from Pembroke High School, Class of 1943. After her sweetheart Donald Hatton returned from the war, they united in marriage on September 2, 1945. They made their home in Charlotte and together ran Don’s Grocery, a favorite stop for coffee and donuts for people on their way to work in Calais and Woodland. Florence also kept the books for the family construction business. Together, Florence and Donald enjoyed camping, attending fairs around Maine, especially the Fryeburg Fair, and spending time at their camp on Pennamaquan Lake. For the last several years, she enjoyed living with her granddaughter Shannon Lane, who provided Florence with great love and care.

In addition to her parents, Florence was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Donald; and her eleven siblings. Surviving are her four children, Dana Hatton and wife Dixie, Dennis Hatton, Sally Williams and husband Edwin, and Sonia Seeley and husband Stephen, all of Charlotte; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Coralie Clark, Betty Hatton, Ruth Sawyer and Thursa Sawyer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2019 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Florence’s life will be held in the funeral home Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ernest James officiating. Burial will be held 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 18th at Round Pond Cemetery.
