Obituary for Frances Teresa Smith (Bassett)

Frances T. Smith, 73, passed away January 24, 2008 surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born August 1, 1934 at Pleasant Point the daughter of George and Margaret (Polis) Bassett. Frances married Clifton E. Smith, Sr. on February 26, 1952. She was a Member of the Maine Basket Makers Alliance and received recognition for making the smallest baskets of ash and sweetgrass known as “charm baskets”. She sold her baskets to the Abbe Museum and people from all over would buy them. She was also known for her unique style of bead work that included dream catchers and jewelry. She loved playing bingo and poker and loved being with her family at special gatherings. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sons; Robert, Stephen and Baby, a grand-daughter, Angel, three great-grandchildren; Derek, Michael and Andreá. Frances is survived by her husband Clifton of nearly 56 years and their children; Margaret (Dolly) Apt and husband Forrest, Clifton Smith Jr. and companion Rachael, Barbara Newell and husband Kenneth all of Pleasant Point, Katharine Smith and companion Wayne of Dennysville, Ralph Smith and wife Lynn of Perry, Ruby Griffin and husband Mike of Whiting, William Smith and companion Dalejo of Pleasant Point, Lisa Dana and husband Rick of South Portland, David Francis III and wife Heather, Holly Smith and companion Willie, three Brothers; Kenneth Bassett, George Bassett, Jr. and Joseph Bassett all of Pleasant Point, 22 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren all of whom loved and adored their “Nan”, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her “adopted son” Reggie Stanley, Special friends; Justina and Mike Niles, Christina Taylor, Lorraine Francis, Alice Tomah, Martha Nicholas and so many more.
