Francis William “Sonny” Pike, 79, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Maine Veterans Home of Bangor. Sonny was born in Calais on February 28, 1944, son of Arthur and Margaret (Noble) Pike.
Sonny was raised in Milltown and graduated in 1962 from Calais High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving at Loring Air Force Base where he worked with the underground missiles during the Vietnam War and Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Doris Perkins. Following his service, Sonny returned to Calais and started his career with Georgia Pacific where he ended his career as a Superintendent. After retiring with 39 years of service, Sonny was able to focus full time on his business, Pike’s Landscaping, which he still owned and operated today.
Sonny stayed active in his life and enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, golfing, and going for rides on the back roads. Family was most important to Sonny. His hunting trips to Anticosti Island with his son were special to him, especially when they were accompanied by his grandson. Sonny was a member of St. Croix Lodge No. 46 AF & AM where he was a 55-year member, St. Croix Royal Arch Chapter No. 17, St. Croix Council No. 11, R&SM, Hugh De Payne Commandery No. 15, Schoodic Shrine Club, and Anah Temple Shrine. He also was a member of the Quarter Century Club with Georgia Pacific, and the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Francis A. “Sonny” Pike; sisters, Alberta Blance, Ann Brown, and Jane Olsson; a brother John Pike; and a special nephew Eric Olsson. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Doris Pike; two grandchildren, Kristine Pike and fiancé William Romanelli of Orrington, and Nathan Pike and wife Sarah of Baring; four great-grandchildren, Danica Paul, Torin Paul, Isla Pike, and Andie Romanelli; sister-in-law Elaine Dinsmore of Brewer; and many nieces and nephews.
