Calais – Fred Edwin Allen Sr., 86, passed away Sunday, July 29 at his home with his loving family by his side. Fred was born in Millinocket on June 20, 1926, son of the late Alden and Ethel (Marden) Allen. After graduating from Rockland High School, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as a Radioman during WWII. Following his military service, he returned to Maine and graduated from Colby College, Class of 1950. His first teaching job was in Dennysville as a teaching principal in 1951. Fred went on to teach at Hollis High School and as principal at Bingham High School. He eventually began his superintendency work for School Union 110, which incorporated many schools including Lee, Springfield and Kingfield. He next became superintendent in the Mechanic Falls area for six years, followed by 15 years in Mexico, ME (S.A.D. 43) and lastly serving 2 ½ years at Eastport School Union 104. After retirement from superintendency he briefly tutored individuals pursuing their GED’s at the Washington County Technical College, then worked as Business Manager of the Eastport School Union for four years. In addition to his studies at Colby College, Fred had a master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono and a certificate of advanced graduate study at Boston University. He was a member of the State Superintendent’s Assoc. where he was on the insurance and negotiations committees; the New England School Development Council where he was on the Board of Directors; the American Association of School Administrators; the Lions club and served on the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society in Oxford County. Fred enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing, but most importantly spending time with his loving wife and family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son Robert Allen; his brother Charles Allen; and a sister Barbara Bean. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Constance (Crosby) Allen and their loving dog Suzie Q; three children, Fred Allen Jr. and his wife Barbara of Mexico, Pamela Jean Allen and her companion James Randall of Calais, and Catherine Wright and her husband Richard of Wayland, MA; daughter-in-law Jill Allen of Oquossoc; a sister Alice Christianson of Bangor; eleven grandchildren, Greg Allen and his wife Christine of MA, Heather Tozier and her husband Dave of Peru, Melissa Allen of Mexico, Craig Allen of Mexico, Jamie Drouin of Hartford, Eric Lloyd of Biddeford, Robyn Leighton and her husband Justin of Alexander, Becca Sheeley of NJ, Andrew Wright of Boston, MA, Jeff Wright of Cambridge, MA, and Alex Wright of Wayland, MA; and five great-grandchildren, Austin, Darien, Nathan, Jack and Paige. Friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a celebration of Fred’s life will begin at 11 a.m. Friends and family are invited to Calais High School for a gathering after the service. Following the luncheon, a graveside committal will take place 2 p.m. at Dennysville Cemetery.
