Eastport – Freda Elizabeth Call, 83, passed away February 28, 2008 in Calais. She was born May 19, 1924, in Eastport, daughter of the late Fred and Fannie (Wilbur) Call. Freda attended school in Eastport and graduated from Shead Memorial High School, Class of 1943. She held many jobs in Eastport, including working in fish factories, the woolen mill, the Mearl Corporation, Connors Aquaculture, Shead High School, Kinney’s Flower and Gift, and at one time operated a lunch counter with her good friend, Elaine Hall. She especially enjoyed working with young people at Shead High School, where she was a teacher’s aide. She was a beloved coach of the girls basketball team for many years. In later years she became a “cheerleader” with her good friends, who were known as “The Slipper Ladies” because of their fuzzy tiger slippers. They attended all of the basketball games to support the Shead Tigers. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her friends, “The Q Tips.” Freda will be forever remembered for making “The Fourth”, Eastport’s Grand Independence Day Celebration, special for so many. Besides her parents, Freda was predeceased by her brother, Clarence Call; her sisters, Mary McCoy and Grace Morse; nephews, Wayne, Glen and Elmer; and her nieces, Linda and Sharon. Surviving are two sisters, Thelma Lank of Eastport and Estella Snow of Portsmouth, NH; as well as many nieces and nephews. She will also be greatly missed by her extended family, Inez Mills, who she considered her sister; as well as Judy and Dana Turner, Wesley and Heather Turner and their children, Cole, Chase and Christian; and Christina and Gerald Greenlaw and their children, Drew and Madison and special friend Jimmy. She considered them to be her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Freda will also be missed greatly by her dear friends, Elaine, Dimpy, Jackie, Dolly, Mary, Barnie, Gladdie, Margaret and Louise. At her request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Those who wish to donate in her memory may send donations to Shead Athletic Boosters Club, c/o Shead High School, 89 High St., Eastport, ME 04631, or the Eastport 4th of July Committee, c/o Gloria Harris, The First, 102 Washington St., Eastport.
