SIPAYIK - FREDERICK JOHN FRANCIS JR., 59, died unexpectedly at his home on April 28, 2009. He was born December 11, 1949, the son of Frederick J. Francis, Sr. and Ada (Bailey) Francis. Fred was born and raised at Sipayik and graduated from Shead High School in 1968. After graduation, Fred proudly served his country as a United States Marine, serving in Puerto Rico and Vietnam. He graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in 1982. He was a member of the V.F.W., Post # 11299 and the American Legion. He served his beloved Passamaquoddy community as Lt. Governor and as a Tribal Council Member for more than two decades. Fred was employed by the Passamaquoody Tribe for many years, most recently as an investigator for Child Protective Services. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by two brothers, James and Clyde Gerard Francis. He is survived by his three sons: Frederick J. Francis III and Keona of Sipayik; Joshua Francis of Sipayik and his companion, Trisha; and Joel Francis of Sipayik; one daughter, Amy Francis of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters: Deanna Francis of Sipayik and Beverly Francis and her companion, Austin, both of Sipayik, and one precious granddaughter, Keaira Komiwon (Rain) Francis; two nieces, Ann Sopiel of Indian Township and Juanita Day of Calais, Maine. Fred enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his beautiful granddaughter Keaira. He also took pride in keeping the yard mowed and plowed with his dog Shadow always by his side. Fred will be sadly missed by co-workers at the T.O.B. his many friends, especially his buddy Steve Nicholas. Friends and family will gather at Fred’s home at Pleasant Point starting Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anne’s Catholic church at Pleasant Point at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Interment at the Tribal cemetery will follow the mass. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
