Calais – George F. Murphy, 78, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 with his family by his side at Calais Regional Hospital. George was born in Calais on July 12, 1934, son of the late Wellington and Margaret (Boyd) Murphy.
After high school, George entered the United States Marine Corps, serving as a rifleman. He returned home to Calais and started his career with Georgia Pacific in 1966, retiring in 1997. On April 16, 1977, he married Debbie Johnson. George was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Calais, Marine Corps League, and Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion in Calais. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, animals, and watching sports, especially the Calais Blue Devils.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William Murphy; and his canine companion Benji. Surviving are his loving wife of 36 years, Debbie Murphy; his daughter Kimberly Bridges and her husband John of St. Stephen, NB; three grandchildren, Katie-Lynn Bridges, Heather Mae Bridges, and John Michael Bridges Jr.; his mother-in-law Bertha Johnson of Baring; a sister Pauline Hartley; two dear friends, Lynn Howard Daggett and Mertt Brown, both of Calais; and his canine companion Tiffy. A special thanks goes to his loving daughter Kimberly, and his two dear friends, Lynn and Mertt, for their many hours spent taking George to his Cancer Care of Maine appointments.
A celebration of George’s life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2013 at Calais Cemetery with military honors. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Second Baptist Church, 21 Church St., Calais, ME 04619, or the Calais Regional Hospital Nightingale Room, 24 Hospital Lane, Calais, ME 04619.
