Obituary for Gerald Morris Carter Jr.

Calais – Gerald Morris Carter Jr., 80, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010 at his home with his family by his side. Gerald was born in Calais on May 17, 1929, son of the late Gerald and Mae (Scott) Carter Sr. After graduating from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1948, he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Korean War. He returned home and worked as a meat cutter for John Cassidy Grocery Store in Milltown until starting his career with Dead River. Gerald retired from Dead River in 1987. He enjoyed puttering in the garage, taking long walks, boating, spending time at their home on Pleasant Lake, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Gerald was a member of the Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion and the St. Croix Bowling Club. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Carl Carter. Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy “Shorty” Carter; four children, Cathy Rayner and her husband Stephen of Spruce Head, Chris Carter and his wife Liz of Biddeford, Dale Carter of Madison, WI, and Ray Carter and his wife Susan of Calais; seven grandchildren, Jared Bridges of York, Kali Rayner of Spruce Head, Megan Sayer and her husband Ryan of Biddeford, David and Sarah Carter of Madison, WI, and Dylan and Taylorae Carter of Calais; two sisters, Mary Gordon and her husband Bill of Calais, and Joan Corey of Marlborough, MA; a brother Roy Carter and his wife Paula of Scottsdale, AZ; and many nieces, nephews and friends. In keeping with Gerald’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. Donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to the Community Health & Counseling Services, Home Health & Hospice Dept., 42 Cedar St., Bangor, ME 04401, or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
