Calais – Gertrude Florence Mercier, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Eastport Memorial Nursing Home. Gertrude was born in Milltown, NB on December 14, 1919, daughter of the late Allan and Florence (Ryan) Kelly. After attending Catholic Parochial School in Calais, she worked at Gem Restaurant in Calais where she met Albert Mercier. They married in July, 1953, and owned and operated Albert’s restaurant for 20 years in Princeton while raising her six children. In 1971 Gertrude moved to Calais and started working as a CNA for Barnard’s Nursing Home until her retirement. She was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais. Gertrude enjoyed dancing, singing, gardening, deep sea fishing, going for car rides, outdoor parties in her yard, and Christmas time, especially going into the woods cutting down her own tree with her brother Leo. She enjoyed her little border collie Trixie, whom she had for 12 years. Overall, her most cherished memories were those times spent with family.
In addition to her parents, Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Albert; and 7 siblings, James, Jerome, George, Lawrence, Leo, Charles, and Margaret. Surviving are her six children, twins Paula Mercier of Calais, and Peter Mercier and wife Beth of Princeton, Stephen Mercier of Washington, DC, Kenny Mercier and wife Kathy of Alexander, Ralph Mercier of Calais, and David Mercier and fiancé Annette Greenwood of Kentucky; two grandchildren, Peter and wife Brooke, and Randy; 5 great-grandchildren; her sister Mary Kelly of Calais; sister-in-law Joan Kelly of Calais; dear family friends, Carol Beousoleil of St. Stephen, NB, Myron Taylor of Virginia, Debbie Kneeland Polzun of CT, Pam Richard of Old Town, and Maggie Swan of Hudson; and many nieces, nephews, and family friends.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A Service of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, 31 Calais Ave, Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.
