Pembroke – Feisty to the end, Gladys Elizabeth (Lingley) Stanhope, “Grammie Gladys”, departed on her final journey Saturday evening, April 18, 2009 at a Bangor hospital following a short illness. She was born in Edmunds on November 10, 1923 and lived most of her life in Pembroke. In earlier years, Gladys was employed by several fish factories in the area, as well as by Guilford Mills in Eastport. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Pembroke Grange. Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Alvery and Hope (Phinney) Lingley; her husband, Milton Stanhope; a son, F. Eugene Stanhope; brothers George, Harland, Malcolm and Harvey; and a half-brother, Sumner Lingley. Survivors include her son, Richard Stanhope and his wife Janice; daughter-in-law Pauline; four grandchildren, Kevin, Mark, Gregory and Diane; six great-grandchildren, Justin, Shelby, Candace, Matthew, Courtney and Chelsea; two sisters, Susie and Mae; three brothers, Clyde, Earl and Donald; a sister-in-law, Pauline Sprague and her husband Merle; and many nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered by Helene who always called her “Grammie”.
